Greetings, BeltLandians! The weekend is upon us and, as usual, there's plenty to do along Atlanta's Yellow Brick Road and it's environs. With the official start of summer this week, it is time to grin and bear the Georgia heat for the next few months. As we know, the humidity can be wicked this time of year; however, this should not keep us from soaking up some of the Braves' final games at the Ted before the team’s stadium is officially OTP. If you’re looking for some events this summer … [Read more...]
Outdoors on the BeltLine
When it comes to outdoors and the BeltLine, we’ve got two words: Parks and Recreation.
Parks? We got ‘em. Described as Atlanta’s Emerald Necklace, the BeltLine is a linear park it’s own self. But like any good, growing thing it has sprouted several other parks on what was once blighted urban grayfields, including Boulevard Crossing, D.H. Stanton, Gordon White, Perkerson and the stunning and brilliant Historic Fourth Ward Park.
On the recreation map you’ve got H4W Skate Park, kissed by the Eastside Trail, hugged by a large athletic field, and blessed by the High Priest of the Half Pipe himself, Tony Hawk.
The appeal of the rail trail is that it’s a level, safe path built on an old railroad. It has inspired a surge in bicycle culture (which we unabashedly celebrate) and an explosion in active lifestyles with scores of folks burning calories instead of carbon via every conceivable mode of human-powered transit.
Putting the Market in Ponce City Market
Tuesdays just got more exciting, y’all! May 3rd heralded the opening of the new Ponce City Farmers' Market held under “The Shed” right on the BeltLine. I went a little later in the evening and it had definitely drawn a crowd. I try to do a once-over with all booths at farmers’ markets when I first get there to see what everyone has available and to get more bang for my buck. I usually just bring a fresh Jackson (or Tubman, if you’re from the future) with me and I like to stretch it, but I also … [Read more...]
Re-Learning To Ride A Bike On The BeltLine
We're all jumping some sort of hurdle in our lives. Juggling jobs, families, running a business, maintaining relationships, creating new ones; we're all working around some sort of challenge. Those challenges can be present in our every day normal activities, or they can be more like the one I'm writing about today: in the back of your mind, and slowly nagging you to death. A few years after 1999 I was tooling around my college campus on my bike, zipping through throngs of students to get to … [Read more...]
Find Our BeltLine Stash and Net Some Cash
We’re going to start giving away money. So we hid a twenty dollar bill today. Perhaps we should explain: 1. We are unabashed Ambassadors of the BeltLine Lifestyle. It’s because we are grateful to claim as our neighborhood a band of emerging infraculture that is arguably the best thing to happen to Atlanta in a long while. Part of our mission at BeltLandia is to promote buying local from the best businesses, restaurants, shopping, and services in the corridor. 2. Our work is helping home … [Read more...]
5th Annual Lantern Parade
A menagerie of lanterns at the 2013 Lantern Parade, photo by Naoya Wada The Lantern Parade is an annual event that celebrates the opening of Art of the Beltline exhibit. This colorful display began in 2010, the brainchild of former New Orleanian Chantelle Rytter, whose mission to bring out creativity and playfulness in all of us has exploded along with the beloved BeltLine it follows. In 2013, it's 4th year, an estimated mass of 10,000 people came out over the course of the evening to witness … [Read more...]
The Arts Take Center Stage On the BeltLine
Public art -- both visual and performance -- has always been a fundamental component of the Atlanta BeltLine vision. Year five of the biannual Art on the BeltLine kicks off with The Lantern Parade this September 6. Over 240 proposals were vetted for artistic merit, concept originality, feasibility and community engagement with almost 100 visual and performance pieces selected. In similar news, Atlanta BeltLine, Inc. has received a $100,000 National Endowment for the Arts Grant to build … [Read more...]
BeltLine Etiquette: Being Polite Could Save Life & Limb
In the opening scene of Captain America: The Winter Soldier, we learn something about trail etiquette from America’s most courteous and virtuous superhero. As a man is running on a trail around the National Mall we see the good Captain Steve Rogers suddenly blow past him at five times his pace. We watch him lap the man a total of three times, each time calling out “on your left!” as he zooms by at superhuman speeds. It’s something for those moving at the fastest speeds on the BeltLine to … [Read more...]
A Tale of Three Trails
The BeltLine vision has always been about daisy-chaining communities. Turns out the original theme of connecting a loop of 45 historic intown Atlanta neighborhoods is just the beginning. As the BeltLine evolves it is becoming the central hub of a multi-county spoke-and-hub trail network. Three significant spoke trails are in various stages of development that will connect intown Atlanta to places as far away as Anniston, AL. Here are some details on a triumvirate of unbuckled versions of the … [Read more...]
